Once all players have made their bets, the dealer will check her hole card (using a special viewing window in the table) for a ten underneath. If she has a ten, then she will have a blackjack and all players who bought insurance will be paid 2 to 1 on their insurance wagers. Otherwise, the dealer will continue the game as normal.

Using basic strategy and proper technique, you can reduce the house edge to almost zero, making blackjack one of the very few casino games where the mathematically optimal play actually lowers the house edge.
